Mother of Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt dies at Creighton

CREIGHTON—Helen Hanefeldt, 89, of Creighton, mother of Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt, died Sept. 25. Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 30 at St. Ludger Church in Creighton. Bishop Hanefeldt officiated along with other bishops and priests concelebrating. Burial was in the St. Ludger parish cemetery, in Creighton.

Mrs. Hanefeldt was born Jan. 19, 1933, to George Dufek and Clara Ondracek, the sixth of eight children. A Verdigre native, she was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre. She attended Sparta country school and graduated from Verdigre High School in 1950. After high school, she worked as a bookkeeper for a local business in Verdigre.

She met Adolph Hanefeldt at a polka dance in Verdigre and they were married on Oct. 14, 1953. They lived on a farm south of Center until they moved to Creighton in 1981, raising four children. She enjoyed gardening, watching things grow, and canning. She loved her family and was always happy to be with them for activities, holidays and more. She later enjoyed her grandsons’ baseball games. She also enjoyed her husband Adolph’s polka music, attending dances and Czech festivals where his polka trio, Adolph’s Polka Time, played. They were married nearly 45 years when Adolph died in August 1998.

She was active in her parish as a member of the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America and the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. She helped with funeral lunches at the parish and volunteered to serve school lunches for students who attended St. Ludger’s School. She was the parish pro-life coordinator at St. Ludger Church for many years and was a member of the Knox County Right to Life group, and the Creighton VFW auxiliary. She was active in the Creighton Senior Citizens group. She enjoyed crocheting and making lap quilts for others, and working word-find puzzles. In October 2018, she moved to Avera Creighton Care Centre where she enjoyed social activities with other residents.

Survivors include her children, Pam Reynolds and Bill Hanefeldt, both of Bloomfield, Bishop Hanefeldt of Grand Island, Jerry Hanefeldt of Center; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by seven siblings and her first-born son, James Hanefeldt.
